SIGNING AT THE PEMBROKE ARMS HOTEL

It's not very often you'd use the adjective 'raucous' to describe a book signing but there was certainly a healthy buzz at the STALK ME event on April 3rd.

Perhaps it was the wine, the real ale or the roaring fire in the drawing room but everyone seemed very comfortable and, yes, at certain points in the evening they even remembered to buy a copy of the book.

Writing is a solitary occupation so it's great to be able to get in a room full of people to share the solid product of all those days at the keyboard.

I did a reading from chapter one to remind everyone why they were there and the book table was soon depleted.

Thanks to everyone local and further afield who turned up to support me and for their photographic contributions.  It was great to have my Mum and Dad there as well as a gang of old friends. This year they included my old buddies Gareth Morgan - drummer for GTFBI - prolific horror/fantasy author Tim Lebbon and composer (including work for Ministry Of Sound) of the cool website music, Dave Carr.

Big thanks to Exhibit A and Ido and Alison for their spread and letting me stage the event at The Pembroke Arms.

Everyone who stayed or visited are now looking for an excuse to come back.  Guess I'd better get back to the keyboard.

Your worst nightmare just went viral...

After being involved in a severe car accident and vicious roadside assault, Beth Jordan wakes briefly to discover a coach party of students recording the aftermath with their phones.

Beth furiously attacks the crowd before being restrained and lapsing into a coma.

When she wakes in hospital , Beth is horrified when she's told the clips have been shared online and that millions of people around the world have now seen the incident.

The driver of the car she collided with has vanished without trace and Beth needs the recordings to help piece together exactly what happened.

But somebody is viciously murdering the owners of the clips and deleting them.

What is concealed within those moments and can she find the survivors before the digital fragments of the event disappear forever?

TECHNO THRILLER PANEL AT CRIMEFEST 2013

A special thanks to all those who attended our nine am panel on Friday 31st.  Even though we were up against the mighty Jeffery Deaver and his panel we resisted the temptation to lock them in the green room and still had a great turn out and some intelligent questions to answer.

Present were Dean Crawford, Alex Blackmore, L A Larkin and Emlyn Rees did a great job as side saddle moderator.

We all had our own ways of utilising technology in our thrillers and it made for a very lively and humorous debate.

It was a treat to meet my fellow panelists.  Click on their names to check out their work.  Some great summer reads there.

It was also good to meet fellow ExhibitA author William Sutton who did a stunning trick with his glass of water to the awe of his From Ancient To Modern audience.

SCARE ME SIGNING AT THE PEMBROKE ARMS

Had a fun evening at the SCARE ME signing on the 16th.  Emlyn Rees, my editor from Exhibit A Books, travelled to Wilton for the event, wrangled the crowd, introduced me and updated the assembled about the book's journey and forthcoming movie adaptation. I did a reading and we sold all the books.  When the bottles of red wine had been emptied we all repaired to the newly refurbed bar.  Salisbury Life photographed so will post their glossy coverage on the Press Kit page as soon as I have it.

Thanks to Emlyn,  everyone who were kind enough to come and support me, Jamie and John and all the friendly staff at The Pembroke Arms.

SCARE ME MOVIE

Read the announcement in Cinema Blend HERE

I'm very pleased to reveal that in a deal brokered by Angry Robot/Exhibit A via the Gotham Agency and ICM Partners, major Hollywood studio Relativity Media have acquired the movie rights to SCARE ME.

Relativity Media have been responsible for a string of box office hits including 'The Bourne Legacy,' 'The Social Network,' 'The Fighter,' 'Haywire' and 'Cowboys And Aliens.' They've also produced some great horror/thriller movies including 'The Wolfman,' 'The Strangers,' 'The Last House On The Left,' 'Zombieland' and 'Assault On Precinct 13.'

Equally exciting is that multi-talented actor turned screenwriter and producer Wentworth Miller - star of hit US series PRISON BREAK - is contracted to adapt SCARE ME for the big screen. Wentworth recently wrote the quirky and darkness saturated screenplay for hit psychological horror thriller STOKER starring Nicole Kidman and shot by OLDBOY director Chan-wook Park.  It was produced by Michael Costigan, Ridley Scott and Tony Scott and recently wowed audiences at the Sundance Film Festival.

Wentworth has bravely championed SCARE ME and we now have what we believe to be the perfect home for the project.  Wentworth's screenplay should be underway very soon.

So humongous thanks to all those involved including the indefatigable Emlyn Rees.

More info as soon as it hits my inbox.

SCARE ME PUBLICATION

Apologies for the lengthy silence.  SCARE ME has been in the works at Exhibit A and I've been working on the next stand alone thriller. Things are going to hot up considerably over the next couple of months, however, and this site will be getting a hardcore face lift very soon.

The book is due out in paperback this April 30th (US) and this May 2nd (UK). There's a trade edition, a smaller paperback and the ebook will be available the same time.  More news on the audiobook to follow soon.

You can pre-order your copy by clicking HERE

In the meantime, here's the finalised cover for SCARE ME.  I think Exhibit A have excelled themselves and given it a really crisp and classy look.  Hope you like it too.

More news to follow very soon and thanks for checking this out.

SALVAGE FOR THE SAINT

Was pleased (and surprised) to be asked to write a foreword for SALVAGE FOR THE SAINT by Leslie Charteris.  35 Saint books are being reprinted and published digitally in time for Christmas.

My foreword focuses on The Saint I grew up with - Ian Ogilvy - his own novel writing as well as his work in some of my favourite horror movies namely 'From Beyond The Grave' and 'Witchfinder General' (aka 'The Conqueror Worm').

witchfinder_general_poster.jpg

SLEEP TIGHT

Here is the short horror movie I wrote for producer David McGillivray. David scripted the British horror movies 'Frightmare' and 'House Of Whipcord' amongst others.  I also had the pleasure of chatting with the crew, some of whom had worked on such movies as 'Star Wars,' 'Monty Python And The Holy Grail' and 'The Abominable Doctor Phibes.'

You can watch the short movie (16 mins approx) below although skip it if you're squeamish...

You can also watch it full screen (without SCARE ME soundtrack) HERE

SLEEP TIGHT FINAL AUDIO

And here's the one minute horror I wrote for David.  Again, if you don't like blood, give it a miss.

Watch it below or on YouTube HERE

You can find out more about these and David's other movies at the Pathetique website HERE

BOOK 2 TITLE

After trying a few titles for size, brand new crime imprint of Angry Robot, Exhibit A, have confirmed that SCARE ME will be the title of book 2. More news to follow.  And thanks to all those readers who are still getting in touch to tell me how much they enjoyed STOP ME

PUBLICATION DATES FOR BOOK 2

I've now had the official publication dates for my next book from Angry Robot/Exhibit A.  It will be published in paperback in the US on 30th April 2013 and in the UK on 2nd May 2013.  The ebook should be available to download around the same time.

This may seem something of a wait but, as mentioned below, I'm trying to be forward-thinking about my future work.  This will mean that book 3 will be available a year from these dates instead of me having to go through hell and high water to get it out there.

I'll be regularly posting here and on Twitter and Facebook re details and developments as well as the launch of Exhibit A so I hope you'll bear with me in the meantime.

Thanks so much for your patience.

BOOK 2 – Full Story (28/5/12)

Ironic that my new thriller is about a gruelling journey as that’s exactly what I’ve had in my attempts to bring it to readers.  It’s been a constructive process, however, and getting book 2 right has been as vital as finding the perfect home for it.  After rewrites of my stand alone thriller on the back of interest from a major publisher last year the project unfortunately became the victim of the usual committee pitfalls.  However, I’ve since been offered a very exciting deal.

I’ve had to weigh up my desire to get something to readers this spring with obtaining a solid commitment to my future stand alones and, after much deliberation; I’ve opted for the latter.  This means that book 2 will be hitting the shelves next year so my immediate apologies to anyone who hoped to have it in 2012.  I believed this would be the case until this new offer. The compensation for this is not only will book 2 be published in paperback in the UK it will also be simultaneously published in the US.  The eBook will also be available at the same time.

Better than that  -  I’ve been offered a 2 book deal which means project 3, currently being written, will be available in the same formats in 2014.  Certainly less of a wait… IF you enjoy book 2 that is.

I’m very happy to announce that I’m the first author to be signed to a brand new crime imprint called Exhibit A which is being headed up by Emlyn Rees, crime editor and author of many books including the recent, massively popular thriller Hunted

Exhibit A launches in style next year – hence the wait.  They’re part of the mighty, award-winning Angry Robot publishing house.  They're a very slick and savvy concern that produce some beautiful books.  They’re distributed by Random House in the US.  This has just been announced in The Bookseller and on the Exhibit A website here so now it’s official.

The original title of book 2 was REDEMPTION PLACE but this will change due to some similarity issues with a religious organisation…

The other change to announce is that I’ll be waving goodbye to the Jay part of my name.  This is because of likeness to a famous American crime writer you may be familiar with.  From here on in I’m just Richard Parker.

Wheels are already turning so I'll keep you abreast of developments re title, cover, brand new website etc and I’m hoping my relationship with Exhibit A will mean I can get my work to you on a regular basis.

Heartfelt thanks for everyone’s patience and continued support.  I really do appreciate it.  I’ll be posting regular updates here, on Facebook and Twitter.

CHINESE WHISPERINGS - THE YIN AND YANG BOOK

I'm hoping to have an update re book 2 soon.  In the meantime, I've contributed an unsettling story with a dark twist to a cunning new anthology published by eMergent Publishing co-founders and editors Jodi Cleghorn and Paul Anderson.

All of the stories are set in an airport during the cancellation of flights by fictitious airline, Pangean.  The stories feed off each other to create one solid whole.  Coincidentally, the paperback was published the week Qantas grounded all their flights.

You can find out more about the project at eMergent's website HERE

You can order the paperback HERE

COMPETITION PIX SO FAR...

Many thanks to everyone who has sent pix so far.  Here's a selection.  As you can see, the book's getting round.  Nice to see it in Central Park and Rockerfeller Center (courtesy of Frances Galiardo). You've still got until August 4th to send me your pix for the competition.  You could win copies of thrillers by top authors Zoe Sharp and Elizabeth Corley (see details a few items below).  All you have to do is snap your paperback of STOP ME.  Or, as Dave McCann has below, the cover of the ebook on your reader in an unusual location.  It would be great to see some element of summer holidays in the pic - if not location then sunglasses, barbq, beach ball etc.  Alternatively just snap yourself reading it.  I'm going to feature all the images in a permanent gallery on this site.   Send Twitpics to @Bookwalter or email them to richard@richardjayparker.com

READING FESTIVAL OF CRIME WRITING

Thoroughly enjoyed being on the thriller panel at Reading Festival of Crime Writing.  It was an informal but slickly organised event and we had a good attendance for our discussion about thrillers.  Zoe Sharp and Elizabeth Corley certainly proved that female thriller writers are a force to be reckoned with.  See my blog for all the details.  The festival will be back next year and I highly recommend it.  See Pix.

RANDOM FIVE STAR REVIEWS: BOOK DEPOSITORY

Well written, the characters are brought along in great depth. As you move through the story you end up wanting to know what next? How does it tie together? The bottom line is that you must read this. Parker is a new fresh face in this type of writing and I look forward to more of his work. For I think that his stories will only get richer with the depth that I enjoy.  Maryann Allen

CRIMEFEST 2010

Kudos to the organisers of Crimefest for providing such an enjoyably engaging weekend in Bristol.  As the sun blazed, there was a good mix of enthusiastic readers, writers (published and aspiring) and luminaries from the literary crime scene including Colin Dexter, Tonino Benacquista and Marcel Berlins.

It was great to see so many visitors from the US and I bumped into a few people I knew only from exchanges on the Internet.  The Curzon Panel I was part of on Friday was a very informal affair with good-humoured discussion and plenty of thought-provoking questions from the audience.  It threw up a debate that we've covered before: What exactly consititutes a thriller and what is the definition of a crime novel?  There's clearly a significant crossover.  A lot of thrillers involve crime.  Does a crime novel have to feature a police officer as a protagonist?  If so, where does that leave Miss Marple?

All The Young Punks Panel started the day on Saturday with fellow authors (including Mike Hodges - writer and director of original GET CARTER) and I, ably chaired by Marcel Berlins, discussing our different experiences of getting a book into print.  Everyone had a different story to tell and we just seemed to be getting to the meat of things when our time was up.

I then had the opportunity to go and sit in the audience on some of the other excellent panels that were cued up. From Gyles Brandreth's no-pause-for-breath, anecdotal 'interview' with Peter Guttridge about his Oscar Wilde mysteries to Chris Carter's lecture about serial killers  there was something for all criminal tastes.

I then supported Zoe Sharp at her self defence demonstration as well as sitting in at Leigh Russell's discussion about writing a series and finished with Matt Lynn's chat about wartime thrillers.  My only criticism was that the hotel bar was so vastly overpriced that everyone dispersed around Bristol at the end of the day and the weekend lacked that community drink-up that I've experienced at other literary conventions. Not the fault of the organisers but perhaps there could have been an implied alternative drinking hole.

I had great fun though and saw plenty of copies of STOP ME shifted as well so thanks to everyone who asked me to sign theirs.

And big thanks again to the organisers who were so accommodating and friendly.  The weekend went swimmingly - from my perspective anyway.

ALLESTREE LIBRARY THRILLER DEBATE

As you can see, it was a fun event in Derby.  Q & A amongst the authors, wine, readings and then audience questions made for a very lively evening.  The library had its best attendance for an author event and I'd just like to thank everyone who attended as well as the organisers (special mention for Marie and Christine)for making us so welcome.
